When 6 is 9 Productions was founded in 1983 in New York by Stefan Roloff In 2005, he registered the company with Carola Stabe in Potsdam, Germany where it became a Ltd. company in 2007. Currently, its base is in New York and Düsseldorf, Germany. When 6 is 9 Productions focuses on the development and production of videos, feature- and documentary films. Our goal is to expand customary thought- and viewing patterns, and to create new, groundbreaking styles.

Proof of this strategy’s successful realization is the international production and co- production of over one- hundred influential, innovative videos and documentary films, among them FACE, the prototype of Peter Gabriel’s Grammy Award winning video “Sledgehammer”, ZAAR, the subsequent 1987 Gabriel video, or „The Red Orchestra“, nominated for best foreign film in 2005 by the US Women Critics, which was co- produced with Hybrid Films Inc. New York and ZDF, Das Kleine Fernsehspiel.

Since 2006, When 6 is 9 Productions has produced 50 video- portraits and short films, reappraising former East Germany’s history through personal testimonies. They were screened at Centre Pompidou and other venues, internationally. Our goal is the compilation of these videos in a Shoah- like internet archive, which stores the experiences of people under the GDR dictatorship and makes them accessible at all times, free of charge. Beyond the movie’s cinematic experience, the internet- archive will provide a direct view into the reality behind its fictional account.

Film- and TV productions by When 6 is 9 Productions were shown in festivals around the world and sold in many countries. Based on our long experience, our current focus is geared towards the production of artistically ambitious, commercially successful feature films. In these, special attention is given to the dramatizations of new, unusual topics that are based on true events and accessible to large, international audiences.
